Twenty-seven kilometers north of Clearwater, the home of British Columbia's largest sheep ranches can be found in Vavenby. Vavenby is also the home of the Slocan and Weyerhaeuser saw mills. These mills are the main employers for Vavenby and Avola. Avola is a quiet, close knit community that is approximately 40 km south of Blue River. The community of Blue River is known worldwide for its incredible helicopter skiing and outdoor recreation potential.

Important Economic Sectors
The predominant economic activity in the Subregion is forestry. Tourism, agriculture and ranching also play an important role in the economy of the region.

Forestry
The North Thompson Sub region is part of the Kamloops Timber Supply Area. The Kamloops Timber Supply Area has a productive forest base of over 1.4 million hectares. The allowable annual cut for the Kamloops Timber Supply Area is approximately 2.4 million cubic meters annually.

In the North Thompson Sub region the major forest companies are Gilbert Smith Forest Products Ltd. (Barriere), Slocan Forest Products Ltd. (Vavenby), Tolko Industries Ltd. (Louis Creek) and Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. (Vavenby).

The Kamloops Timber Supply area is now managed under the Kamloops Land and Resource Management Plan, the first of its kind in British Columbia. The goal of the Kamloops Land and Resource Management Plan is to protect the magnificent natural heritage of the area, while maintaining a prosperous economy. This Plan also provides a dispute mechanism for the resolution of any land use conflict.

Tourism
Tourism is an important contribution to the economy in the Sub region. The Sub region is well known for its hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing and outdoor adventure.
Wells Gray Provincial Park is the largest and best known park in the area and is known as an outdoor adventure paradise. Wells Gray Park encompasses 522,000 hectares, with five major lakes, two large rivers systems and spectacular waterfalls. A multitude of outdoor activities are available including hiking, canoeing, fishing, river rafting, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

Blue River is home to world class Heli Skiing and accommodations. Skiers can spend the day swirling down through the powder snow of the Caribous and the Monashees.

Ranching & Agriculture
The topography of the Sub region limits the type of agricultural activities which can be undertaken. The main activities are cattle ranching and the raising of sheep. Vavenby is home to one of the largest sheep ranches in the province. The land in the valley bottom adjacent to the North Thompson River supports the production of forage crops such as alfalfa hay.
